CFA New Program:
“California Fashion Manufacturing” (CFM)

Los Angeles – “California Fashion Manufacturing (CFM)” is a new program and website developed and managed by the California Fashion Association. The mission is to develop opportunities for strategic alliances with Southern California apparel industry brand managers to contract with local industry specialists. The goal is to bring jobs and businesses back to the Los Angeles region by promoting manufacturing and design services in California to the international trade.

Research has shown that 12% to 15% of the production sourced outside the US could return to local manufacturing and, by driving business in the region, create thousands of jobs in the process. To return to the local manufacturing sector in Southern California, CFM will develop

  • A “where to”…source for contractors, printers, textiles, finishing, mechanics, patternmakers, designers, etc.
  • A marketing program and outreach to the trade that this service is available.
  • A team of professionals speaking to the educational institutions discussing career opportunities in an industry where “everyone starts at the bottom”!

CFM acknowledges the persistent barriers to local manufacturing including the dearth of equipment financing opportunities and the lack of industrial training for incoming workers to replace those lost as a result of recent DHS efforts. However, there is still a significant manufacturing base in Southern California on which to build a larger complex as the costs inherent in import sourcing continue to increase.

The California Fashion Manufacturing programs will be defined through the use of concentrated marketing via website, tradeshow participation, and social media interaction.

The target audience will include all local apparel and textile industry participants, including but not limited to contractors, brand holders, printers, textile mills, finishers, patternmakers, designers, manufacturers, and service providers, including a workshop series called ‘Careers in the Industry’ for educational institutions.

The expected outcomes of the CFM program are to:

  • Enhance the ability of the apparel and textile industry of Southern California to attract further business investments and remain competitive in the global market by positioning itself as a comprehensive fashion-sourcing destination.
  • Bring sustainable job growth to the Southern California apparel and textile industry by encouraging manufacturing and production to return to the region.
