Agave is a California lifestyle brand created and represented by artisans and passionate people; we stand for courage, integrity and self-expression. The stated mission: "to design and produce the best tailored, most beautiful and highest quality denim jeans, sewn and hand finished exclusively in California".
Jeffrey Schaefer started Agave in 2002 with 8 jean styles, initially sold by going store-to-store in California. In Jeff’s words:
For the first three years I was the only employee, beginning humbly in my living room in Topanga Canyon with the help of Shinzo Suzuki, Dan Sullivan, brother Brad Shafer and wife Lauren Shafer. I did almost everything myself - designing jeans, making sales calls, and overseeing manufacturing. Eventually we moved to a small office in Santa Monica and hired the first employee.”
Agave grew by word of mouth. At the request of a buyer, we came up with the "perfect jean tee" inspired by the rash guard I used for surfing. Shortly, our women's collection was launched because we discovered that women were wearing our men's jeans.
We make jeans with a passion, and with clear ethical and social standards:
I would only buy from, and sell to people who I would want to be my friend.
I would only make products I would love to wear with pride.
I would have fun every day and balance work with the needs of my family and my health.
I would treat people the way I would want to be treated and "do the right thing."
I would take care of my employees and give back to the community.
Our mission at Agave is to design and produce the best tailored, most beautiful and highest quality denim jeans, authentically sewn and hand-finished, exclusively in California.
In January 2009, in spite of the economic climate, we completed construction of our state of the art 24,000 sq. ft. design and distribution center located 14 miles north of Portland, Oregon. My wife and two sons love the pastoral views adjacent to the Ridgefield National Wildlife Preserve, and now, AGAVE finally has a home.
